Case study: Fit & Healthy
Overview
This case study is part of the final project of the Coderhouse Advanced UX/UI course. The focus was to define an app that needed changes to the user experience and its entire layout.
When defining the Fit & Healthy, we carried out several studies and research in UX to build the product redesign aiming at a general improvement in the user experience, increasing user engagement and reducing their effort to fulfill their tasks within the app.
Function and duration
As a UX designer and student on the course, I collaborated with a group of 2 colleagues who were embarking on a career as a designer. Throughout the project we were supervised by 2 tutors who are very talented and experienced in the area.
The project was developed over the months of the course with a lot of research, user-centered design and very well-defined planning.
Problem Statement
Users of the Fitness & Healthy people have difficulty completing tasks within the app and have difficulty finding the recipes they are looking for.
Goals
Our jointly defined goals included:
-
Identify and understand users’ main challenges within the app.
-
Improve overall usability and user experience by changing flows and UI.
-
Increase user engagement while reducing user effort.
Design Process
Research and Planning
In our design process, we followed some methodologies that were guided during classes to face the app's challenges. We begin with extensive research and planning, carefully defining our research objectives and identifying problem areas within the system through heuristic analysis. To obtain valuable insights, we carried out Card Sorting and Tree testing, defined an MDPU Matrix and carried out a Design Critique. This allowed us to create and validate user personas, develop empathy maps, map intricate user journeys, and thoroughly analyze flows.
The creation of personas and user journey maps was essential for us to understand the target audience and start building new flows. Furthermore, we finish this part with empathy maps to delve deeper into the emotional and psychological aspects of users. These methodologies were the basis for organizing and visualizing all behavioral and emotional aspects of users. By promoting this empathy with users, we obtained important insights that guided our design choices, ensuring that our solutions were more assertive.
Furthermore, we developed the MDPU Map, which was important to guide our planning and define what the main tasks would be. This definition is part of an organization that prioritizes the main features and flows that will be implemented to eliminate user pain points identified in the previous research stages.
Analysis and Insights
With all the research on the current design of the app and its users, it was possible to identify the main points of contact and pain points, realizing that we would need to rethink the entire app, defining standards with the construction of a Design System and creating new categories by removing redundancies. making them more organized and accessible.
Prototyping
Moving forward, we create high-fidelity wireframes and prototypes, building an interface that has consistency and standardization. We introduced new flows and features with the aim of guiding beginner users through navigation in a fluid and intuitive way, significantly reducing confusion. Additionally, we perform a comprehensive review of system paths to ensure smooth interaction while respecting our previous definitions. Our ultimate goal was to align the user interface with users' expectations, generating a pleasant and satisfying experience.
Results
The result of our long research and, subsequently, redesign bore fruit:
-
A clear and simple integration process that reduced user barriers.
-
The standardization and consistency generated by new layouts guided by a Design System reduces the user's level of effort.
-
The new interface met user expectations.
The validation of these processes was carried out through some usability tests to understand what users felt when navigating this new interface.
Impact
The redesign of Recipes Fit & Healthy was part of a very valuable study and learning process in Coderhouse's advanced UX/UI course and was very important for building knowledge and teamwork, always sharing new insights and learning to build an efficient and customer-centered digital product. user.
